A Life Forever Changed
World-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli is celebrated for his captivating voice and inspiring resilience. Born with congenital glaucoma, Bocelli’s path to musical greatness was paved with challenges, most notably the tragic incident that resulted in complete blindness. This life-altering event, which occurred during his childhood, became a defining moment, shaping his perspective and fueling his determination.
Bocelli’s new documentary, “Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe,” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, offering an intimate glimpse into the singer’s life. Through heartfelt interviews and a collection of archival footage, the film delves into the pivotal moments that shaped his career and personal life. Central to the narrative is the poignant retelling of the day Bocelli lost his sight.
Andrea Bocelli's life and career are explored in a new documentary, revealing the impact of his childhood accident and the unwavering support of his family.
A Childhood Marked by Challenges
From an early age, Bocelli exhibited extraordinary musical talent. However, his childhood was also marked by the limitations imposed by his deteriorating vision. Despite undergoing numerous surgeries, his eyesight continued to deteriorate.
“As a child, I was considered extremely short-sighted. I could see everything but only from up close,” Bocelli recalls in the documentary. “I remember extremely well the world I saw. Colours, everything. How could I forget those memories?”
Unable to attend local schools due to his visual impairment, Bocelli was sent to a boarding school for the visually impaired at the tender age of seven. This separation from family was a difficult experience, yet Bocelli persevered, finding solace in music.
The Day Darkness Fell
At the age of twelve, during a casual game of football with friends, tragedy struck. Bocelli, taking on the unfamiliar role of goalkeeper, was struck in the face by the ball. This seemingly innocuous incident triggered a brain hemorrhage, ultimately leading to complete blindness.
“One day, playing [football], I was the goalkeeper. No idea why, as I had never been the goalie before,” he recounts. “And I never would be goalie again. A ball hit me right in the face. From that blow, a haemorrhage.. and the rest is history.”
Bocelli’s brother, Alberto, who witnessed the incident, describes the heartbreaking aftermath: “That’s when he lost… That’s when darkness fell.”
Andrea Bocelli's musical journey began long before his rise to fame, with his passion for singing nurtured from a young age.
An Unwavering Spirit
In the face of adversity, Bocelli’s spirit remained unbroken. His family, particularly his mother, played a pivotal role in his recovery and instilled in him a sense of determination. They rejected pity and encouraged him to embrace life’s challenges head-on.
“My mother feared I wouldn’t be able to fend for myself,” Bocelli shares. “She worked really hard to provide me with tranquillity and stability.”
The documentary poignantly captures the family’s unwavering support and their refusal to allow Bocelli’s blindness to define him. They fostered his independence and nurtured his extraordinary musical gift.

“Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe” is more than just a biographical documentary; it’s a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity and find strength in vulnerability.
