It’s not every day you see a member of the Royal Family let loose and break free from their usual decorum. But back in 2013, Prince William did just that, taking the stage with music icons Jon Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift for a memorable performance of “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
The unexpected collaboration happened at the annual Centrepoint Gala Dinner, a charity event for a homelessness non-profit organization. Prince William, a longtime supporter of Centrepoint, probably expected a night of speeches and polite conversation. In a 2021 podcast interview, Prince William confessed to being completely taken by surprise. “To this day, I still do not know what came over me,” he said. “Honestly, even now I’m cringing at what happened next, and I don’t understand why I gave in.”
He described being in a “trance” as he was led onstage by Swift. It was only midway through the song, when he realized he didn’t even know the words, that the reality of the situation hit him.

But, being a good sport, Prince William decided to go with it. Seeing the crowd, which included young people supported by Centrepoint, enjoying themselves, he resolved to not be “the doofus who’s going to ruin it for everyone.”
The once-in-a-lifetime performance was a hit with the audience and solidified the bond between Prince William and Taylor Swift. Years later, the Prince was spotted letting loose once again at one of Swift’s concerts, proving her infectious energy had rubbed off on him.
