The Genesis of ‘High’: A Story of Creative Reinvention
Country music superstar Keith Urban delighted fans with the release of his eleventh studio album, ‘High,’ a captivating blend of personal narratives and electrifying melodies. The journey to ‘High,’ however, took an unexpected turn, revealing Urban’s unwavering commitment to artistic integrity.
Initially, Urban envisioned a different project altogether. In 2022, he poured his heart and soul into an album titled ‘615,’ a tribute to his beloved Nashville. However, as the final tracks came together, Urban felt a disconnect, a sense that the music wasn’t resonating with his core artistic vision.
In a candid interview with Smooth Country, Urban revealed, “We should have been touring in ’24. But last year, when I wasn’t happy with the record, I could see the writing on the wall.” Rather than compromising his artistic standards, Urban made the bold decision to shelve ‘615,’ choosing creative fulfillment over adhering to a predetermined timeline.

This pivotal moment marked the genesis of ‘High.’ Urban salvaged four tracks from ‘615’ – “MESSED UP AS ME,” “DAYTONA,” “HEART LIKE A HOMETOWN,” and “BREAK THE CHAIN” – and used them as the foundation for his new album. “I love those four songs,” he shared. “So I cherry-picked those four, scrapped the rest, and started rebuilding, and that album became ‘High’.”
A Tapestry of Collaboration and Personal Reflection
‘High’ is not merely a collection of songs; it’s a testament to Urban’s growth as an artist and his willingness to embrace collaboration. The album features a captivating duet with reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year, Lainey Wilson, on the track “GO HOME W U.”
Urban’s admiration for Wilson’s artistry is evident in his decision to reach out to her directly. “I knew about Lainey a couple of years ago and went, okay, I’d love to find something for us to do because I love her voice,” Urban recalled. Originally conceived as a solo piece, “GO HOME W U” took on a new dimension with the addition of Wilson’s soulful vocals.

In addition to the duet with Wilson, ‘High’ showcases Urban’s ability to draw inspiration from his own life experiences. The song “MESSED UP AS ME,” for example, is a poignant reflection on the complexities of relationships. “I’ve been this guy in the song,” Urban admitted. “I know this couple in the song really well. I know this place.”
Another standout track, “WILDSIDE,” delves into the duality of personalities, particularly those who maintain a polished exterior while harboring a hidden wild streak. Urban’s inspiration stemmed from his observations of women in Nashville, where he spent his formative years.
